The app works well and is quite fast. Needs a few improvments: + The UI needs more contrast. It is difficult to see in the UI what is a button and what is the output. The translate button and the language buttons need to either look like buttons or if you want to do iOS-style tinting then they need to have different colors than the rest of the UI. + Add ability to autodetect the language (a la Google Translate style).

I’ve switched from Google Chrome extension and I love it. It would be cool, if you added a shortcut to switch between selected languages.
Are you planning to add a feature to auto-translate a selected text? I switched from the Chrome extension and I’m little disappointed, because I thought that it will provide me the feature in the whole system.

The best program and useful!
I CAN`T EVEN BEGIN TO SAY HOW BAD THIS IS. SCREEN IS TOO SMALL AND HARDLY VISIBLE. YOU CANNOT SEND IN AN E-MAIL THE TRANSLATIONS MUST OF BEEN SET UP BY A HIGH SCHOOL KID THAT IS HIGH NO CREATIVITY FORGET THIS!

i want app to translate a word if i click on it not typing in i prefer to use free google translate instead
I’m now have IT on my Windows PC and my Macbook Pro. This app is awesome, just one click and you get the translation. In the previous version, I got blur window UI bug. I reported to the developer and he give this update after few days to fix the issue. Very good app and support! Thank you!
Simple and fast
Really good translator. Much easier to use than regular google translator.
I think the developer so much for such a handy app for our macs. Just right click on the word you´d like to translate and that´s it. I works the easiest way. Thanks!

Very sophisticated and quick way to get a good translation.
I just got It and I really like it. Very easy and fast; however, It would be nice if the setting has more options like change the rate of voice I just have one problem, Is there a way how to clear the window afte typing? I typed a lot and I don’t kow how to clear all that. I don’t see any button for that…Please, any body can help me? Thanks

App claims to be free but it is not
I would pay BUT…
Pretty insane that 90% of the US sites I go to are considered Norwegian via Mate and this has never been fixed. If you want to charge a premium price, you need to have legit support and fix bugs regularly.
Unacceptable
To sell an app, at a rather hefty price nonetheless, as a life-time purchase, just to switch later to a subscription model, is unconscionable. I don’t need translation services often, as I’m multilingual myself. So for the rare occasions, the original purchase would have been worth it. But I certainly won’t need the high subscription cost, when I might just as well ask ChatGPT to translate text for me, with similar quality. Worse, the barely used "forever" translation functionality, which I paid for, is now gone. For the few text passages I got to translate, that must have been the most expensive translations I’ve ever had done. It’s bogus what they do, and it’s bogus Apple allows them to switch the business model on existing customers. Other companies stopped selling their "forever" apps, and made available free downloads associated with a subscription service, while maintaining and keeping up the original deal with those who bought a "forever" app. To change the business model, without a refund, is not acceptable. If they had refunded the original purchase price in the process of switching to a subscription model then that would have been a nuisance, but at least somewhat fair, even though changing the terms of a contract post-fact would remain dubious. But to have people who paid for a service which they now don’t get, that’s bordering on the fraudulent.
Super frustrating
Locked out of the app, no way to get support. Support via their web site is useless. Don't waste your time or money.
Pay to use
In the about section, there is no message that this is app is a monthly pay as a service. The price per month to pay just to use this app is unreasonable.
Global Shorcut not working on macOS Sequoia
After update the Sequoia global shortcut stopped working. Delete and re-install didn’t work. Please check the comptabilty issues.
Excellent and can get better too
Yes I paid the big bucks for Mate, and I’m happy that I did. This review won’t cover what you did right; you did almost everything right. I have two feature requests. First, translating from my English to Spanish (and similar languages) please supply translations in both genders. Second, include a Settings toggle to completely disable history.
bait and switch malware that will forever inhabit your computer
It was decent when it functioned for free. Now the app has a subscription paywall demanding $50/yr before it even fully opens (blocking access to external controls, like force quit). Since it's programmed to always inhabit the menu bar, the OS recognizes it as "open" and thus cannot fully delete it. Even after deleting all other package contents to make it otherwise nonfunctional, it still will not leave the menu bar and cannot be fully deleted. Whoever thinks they can bait me to trust this company with my credit card to get the free trial just so I can remove the d*** thing can kindly go kick rocks.
Bait and Switch
I decided to purchase this app rather than using a free or subscription based app. Now they've taken away my purhcase are block use with a subcription model. Even worse, advertisements clutter my screen asking for payments and there's no option for a refund for the puchase that was taken from me.

This is a trick, please do not install or else you have to live with it until you provide you data and pay subscription fee.

Auto translate does not work. I have translate each page every time.

Works well enough. Description doesn't make clear that after a free trial period you have to buy a subscription to keep using this app

Shows up under "free" filter in app store... yet it is a paid app .... don't fall for it...
Worth the money!
I find this app very responsive and fast. It detects the language automatically, no need to manually switch. I like it and have deleted the other apps that I was using, including Google Translate.

I don't remember choosing it, but it was a very lucky discovery when I finally gave it a chance. I was immedialty gratefull for it's ability to understand and communicate with fellow viewers on You Tube. it 's perfect for reading and responding to anyone anywhere on the fly.TY

No trial and no cost listed
I downloaded the app, and the seven day trial never happened. It automatically asks for me to subscribe to their paid version. And when they do, there are no prices listed, just "???". Wish there was a free version of this app at least. Lame. Moving on.
PLEASE GET A TRANSLATOR FOR CHINESE
I use this for my business to translate onboarding and troubleshooting documents for my international clients. Imagine my embarrassment when a client hired his own interpreter and requested a zoom video call to get help and informed me also that the docs id sent over were horribly translated. Essentially google translate, which is DISAPPOINTING to say the least. His interpreter is english first language and he said the translation was "horrendous". I'll give it 3 stars because of ease of use and functionality otherwise. Id really like to continue to use it, but you guys have work to do.

Using this so I don't have to use Chrome. But does not autotranslate consistently. Google is translate much better.
Pretty good
I have tried every single Mac translator app that is free or allows a free trial. This is the only acceptable one. It's not perfect, but it works for me. The keyboard shortcut works in Calibre reader, which is very important since the mac dictionary does not work in there, but I wish I didn't have to copy the text first. The shortcut should automatically translate the selected text in my opinion. I like the popup when selecting text in safari. Problems: The sound does not work for russian. Also It does not translate offline; when my internet went out, this app was useless.
Try to deleate it
It looks like you cannot delete app untell you subcribe. Just like Mal-ware I had to open the app's contents with finder, then delete each file (submiting my lofon password each time) till i had an empty app. Next I had to reboot so I could trash the empty app. so much fun...
Super Star Mate!
This Mate is a Saviour. I work in thailand and I can't read docs or some emails in thai. But Mate helps me read the content instantly by copying to the clip . Would be nice if the integration works in transalating emails and docs too.

Great for Netflix-but overall translation is mediocre
I would never use this app for serious translation. But it does work very well with Netflx.
Doesnt work
It would not translate pages like it says it does. I tried many ways and found it impossible to locate the translated page, even though it would say it was translated. So, either its very difficult to use or the feature doesnt work as stated.
Seamless, Accurate Translator
I text a client in Spanish offline and this translator works seamlessly. I can copy or type text in, and set it so it translates instantly and copies automatically to my clipboard so I can just paste right into a text on my computer. I can actually type and translate so quickly on my computer that I actually have to slow down to accommodate a person texting with their fingers on a phone. It is much faster and more private than a web-based translater, and more accurate translation, too. And it also identifies which language I'm translating from instantly, so no clicking a button to switch from translating my language to theirs, to translating their language to mine. This is a very well designed app and makes it possible for me to work in another language without trying to use a live translator - which I do have access to - but which takes a lot of time and there are platform compatability issues there. LOVE THIS APP.
A piece of GARBAGE!!!
I just Downloaded this to my iMac (MacOS Catalina Version 10.15.7) and it glitched right from the start! I signed in, created a password, and began to type a letter to an old friend in Germany. It BEGAN to translate, then when I reversed the translation, it began to "spin" and wouldn't translate. After trying several times, I finally closed the app and tried to re-open it with ZERO SUCCESS! I've tried to open it numerous times, and even shut my computer down in hopes it would open upon restarting the computer. NO SUCH LUCK! I went into Force Quit the App, but it didn't show there. I decided to drag it to the Trash, but it says it can't put it in the trash because it's OPEN???? Where's it open??? I have an icon which doesn't function and even the icon won't go away in the trash to try to reinstall it. I want my money back and the icon to go away!!!
Crashes and freezes my mac
Within 2 days of use, crashed in the middle of translation and froze my computer.
It brings commiunication to a new level
I have conversations with people pretty much all over Europe. This program a has made it so much easier to have meaningful conversations, that you would think you were using a Universal Transpator fro Star Trek. It would be great if you could somehow incorporate it into the chat menus, but the copy and paste goes rather smoothly with minimal delays.
Use DeepL for Mac instead
This review is only about the Mac App. The translation quality of Mate is ok but not great. It often doesn't give me what I'm looking for and I need to use Linguee's website to find what I'm looking for. For a completely FREE solution for Mac desktops, I can recommend DeepL for Mac. The translation quality is much higher and offers a lot of features baked in that Mate doesn't try to do.

It's so useful to have a translator living right in the menubar. Enables me to write to friends in their own language and works accurately.
Great app but want a little more for the price
I've been happy with the simplicity of how to use the app. It is expensive but it works flawless even on a 10 year old MBP 15". I wish the Safari extension could be toggled to 2 different settings. One for automatic (similar to Google Chrome) and one for as it is now. There are sometimes where an automatic translation for extended periods would be a time saver.
Safari Extension Broken
The app doesn't know what Saturday is in Japanese. That pretty much tells you the quality of that dictionary at least. Also, the extension is a joke. It crashs with every use.

Not bad, but not worth the money
Both the OS and iOS versions feel more like Beta programs. Even after tech support: Phrasebook doesn't sync across devises, several Safari extention features didn't work, too many translations were incorrect or incomplete. Conceptually awesome. Practically annoying. Not BAD, just not worth the money.
Standalone app fine. Safari extension useless
I got this for the safari extension. It crashes constantly, then apparently restarts itself so that it can proudly announce that it has crashed again. Lousy extension. If that's what you need it for, don't waste your money. Peter White Hillsborough, NH
Yay - Boo
This extension works extremely well on Safari at translating web pages, and I would give it five stars for its simple funtionality. But it also defeats my ad blocking extensions with no simple way to turn it off and on as needed for each website. For the first time in years, suddenly web pages are filled with advertising I haven't had to deal with whenever the Translator extenion is installed. So my review has to fall in the middle between loving and hating it.
Doesn't work as advertised
Just purchased v. 6.1.4. It doesn't work inside Safari. Have to physically copy/paste text into the pulldown menu to get a tanslation. I'm shocked Apple does such a lousy job vetting what they allow in the App Store.
Was great until...
This app was amasing until the Catalina operating system upgrade but now it crashes as soon as you try to use it stand alone. <sad face> I emailed the crash log to their support people but never heard anything back. <double sad face> C'est triste quand les bonnes applications vont mal. Update: It was fixed. Life is good.

Just updated to 6.1.3. The update totally crashed the app. It won't launch now at all. Disappointing.
